Mitre shows signs of life as Swisher and Jeter go yard

Sergio Mitre who has had some trouble in his first few starts showed that he has the ability to pitch at the Major League level. He managed to pitch very well tonight as he allowed two runs but only one was an earned run through 5 1/3 innings. Sergio is now 2-1 and an ERA of 6.04 which won't tell you much because he was nervous in a few starts, but now has seemed to become more comfortable.

For the Seattle Mariners it was another game where Griffey was exposed for being beaten by almost any fastball. You can see that he just has a long slow swing instead of that short quick uppercut swing through the strike zone. Seattle got a good starting performance from Lucas French who went 6 innings and allowed 4 unearned runs which were nowhere near his fault as he struck out two giving up 7 hits.

During the first inning the Yankees were on there way to getting things rolling as Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez drew back to back walks with 2 outs. Jorge Posada came up and selfishly hacked at a first pitch out of a zone and did the same on a 3-2 pitch to hit a deep fly out.

The thing about Posada selfishly chasing a first pitch in that situation proves as good as he is at hitting he is not a situation hitter. The same could be said in the top of the 3rd inning where Alex Rodriguez got a great jump on first base with nobody out after another walk and Posada swung at the first pitch he saw again lining into a double play.

It really just seemed like an off night for Posada at the plate as he managed to ground out into a big double play in the 7th after that. The thing about tonight that really stood out to me was how good Jose Molina is behind the plate. The way he gunned down Ichiro at third base in a huge spot where Ichiro got a decent lead.

When Ken Singleton said it was a mistake yeah it was but normally with Posada behind the plate I don't know anymore. If it were on the first pitch and it were a double steal even with 2 outs I guess with a team down in the standings I would understand mixing it up but not on a 2-0 pitch with Russell Branyan up. You could see Ichiro was itching to swipe third but if that were his mindset he should have went on the first pitch 2nd pitch tops. A player with Ichiro's speed if he feels he can steal a base I would trust him just not on a 2-0 pitch.

The offense got going on a 2nd inning 2 out 2 run home run for Nick Swisher who was holding down the number 2 slot in the lineup as Johnny Damon got the night off. You have to like Nick Swisher the way he speaks with class you can see that he is a solid player but at the game he finds a way to dish out respect to Johnny Damon. Swisher brings a lot of excitement to the Yankees as he is just all around a great guy to have on the team.

There was a point in the game where Seattle had the bases loaded with 2 outs and David Robertson got the big strikeout as Molina did an excellent job of framing something that Jorge Posada needs to start doing its not that hard its just working the umpire/

Derek Jeter clubbed a solo shot his 15th of the season over the field field wall in the top of the 9th to make it 5-2 which would end up being the final score.

You cannot say enough about the year he has been having just when it seems as if Jeter is on his last legs he just keeps coming and coming especially when you need it most. Overall on the night he was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

The Yankees will look to close out the series tomorrow night as Joba Chamberlain 8-2 will be taking on Doug Fister who just made his debut on the 8th of this month surprising teams as he shows what he can do on the mound.

The Yankees have no pressure tomorrow as they are now 7 and a half games up in the AL East for first place as the Red Sox suffered another blow dropping their game tonight to the Texas Rangers 7 to 2.
